At the heart of TV Celeb-Birdies birdhouses are our new, custom designed, Night Owl Night Vision and Red Robin color cameras.

Our Night Owl comes complete with six infrared diodes that bathe the nest box in invisible infrared light allowing for a clear, sharp televison image day and night. By the way, the folks at the Cornell Ornithology Lab say this light in no way interferes with bird behavior.

Mounted beneath the roof of a nest box, the wide angle lens easily covers the entire floor of any house. A depth of focus of one-quarter inch to infinity assures a sharp image of any bird or squirrel house resident . . .and their young. These incredible cameras come with a built in microphone and 100 feet of cable. One hundred foot extension cables are available, if you want to go beyond the original 100 feet.

A common question is: “Why not color cameras in the birdhouses?” Quite simply, too much light is needed. Without the build-in infrared lights, the Night Owl cameras only need about 0.5 lux (one half candle power) to operate. The small openings and vent slots of most birdhouses let in more than enough light for the Night Owl. Color cameras, on the other hand, need on the order of 3-5 lux of light to operate, which is far more than can enter through a small entrance hole. But what about that IR light? Sorry. It’s great for black and white images, but isn’t a reflective, color light.

While color isn't an option inside our birdhouses, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your fine feathered friends pecking away at suet and seeds at your feeders, in full living color. Our Red Robin color camera comes in a weather-resistant case and 60 feet of attached cable which is also easily extendable. It also has a built in microphone.

All this technology is surprisingly easy to use. Both audio and video, as well as power, are carried between camera and TV or computer through a durable ‘plug-n-play’ cable. Simply hang the birdhouse, or mount the Red Robin camera near the feeder or birdbath, run the cord into the house and plug it into the video– and audio-in, RCA ports on the television. On most you just need to turn on the TV to start watching. On some older models you have to go into the television menu and switch the set to ‘monitor’. If your television doesn’t have RCA ports, but you do have a VCR connected to it, you can connect the TV Celeb-Birdies cameras through the ports on the VCR. Complete instructions are supplied with each.
